The East-Coast Monsoon Calendar for Campers

Plan east-coast camping around the monsoon, not against it. November to March brings the heaviest rain. June and July are usually the safest mainland months. Islands run their own schedules, so check ferry and resort dates before you book.

The calendar and warning details below come from MetMalaysia, the Public Infobanjir portal and operators' own pages.

East-coast monsoon calendar

• Tioman dry season: May to September. Berjaya Tioman Resort says this is the island's reliable-weather window.
• Driest mainland months: June and July. MetMalaysia lists these as the dry months for most east-coast states.
• Northeast monsoon: November to March. MetMalaysia says this is the main rainy season. Cold Siberian air turns northeasterly off the China coast and meets equatorial low pressure.
• Wettest stretch: November, December and January. These are the maximum-rainfall months on the east coast.
• Bubu Resort and Bubu Villa on Pulau Perhentian Kecil close from 1 November to 28 February.
• Tanjung Gemok ferry terminal, one of two mainland departure points for Pulau Tioman, closes from November to February. A second mainland terminal exists, but its ferry operators could not be named from the available pages.
• The Taaras Beach & Spa Resort on Pulau Redang stays open all year. Its private beach is sheltered by two bays.

Keep this calendar beside your booking notes. A mainland site may stay open in November, but a beachfront pitch can turn muddy within hours.

Islands need extra checks. Resorts list their own closure windows, and ferry terminals do not always follow resort calendars.

What the warning levels mean

MetMalaysia issues three continuous-rain warning tiers. Match each tier to a clear action before you pitch your tent.

• WASPADA — less than 150 mm of continuous rain expected in 24 hours. Pack extra dry bags, expect wet ground and have an indoor backup plan.
• BURUK — more than 150 mm of continuous rain expected in 24 hours, with possible flooding in low-lying and riverbank areas. Do not camp beside rivers or in flood-prone ground. Move to higher ground if you are already there.
• BAHAYA — more than 250 mm of continuous rain expected in 24 hours. Cancel the trip or leave immediately. Do not try to ride out the heaviest rain in a tent.

How to read Infobanjir

JPS's Public Infobanjir portal marks river and rainfall stations with colour codes.

• Station status: Normal, Waspada, Amaran or Bahaya.
• Rainfall rate: Renyai 1–10 mm, Sederhana 11–30 mm, Lebat 31–60 mm, Sangat Lebat over 60 mm.
• If the station upstream of your site hits Sangat Lebat or the river status rises, treat that as a sign to move.

Infobanjir updates at regular intervals from telemetry points across Malaysia. A green reading now does not rule out a storm later, so recheck on the day.

What to watch before you go

• Check the Public Infobanjir station status for the river nearest your campsite.
• Watch rainfall at upstream stations. Sangat Lebat means more than 60 mm and rising rivers.
• Look at the water colour and speed. Muddy, fast-flowing water means runoff upstream.
• Read the latest MetMalaysia warning. If Buruk or Bahaya covers your area, change your plans.

Cross-check the resort or ferry schedule too. A closure notice from the operator matters more than the calendar alone.

A November or December trip can still work, but it needs the closest daily watch. Have a backup date or a higher-ground site ready.
