Camping in School Holidays Without Regretting It

School holidays are the dates families usually plan camping trips. The 2026 calendar differs between Kumpulan A and Kumpulan B, so check the dates before you book.

School-year dates come from KPM; public holidays come from JPM; the 2027 start date comes from KPM's announcement.

Know your group

The 2026 school year returns to a January start. Kumpulan A opens on 11 January. Kumpulan B opens on 12 January.

KPM splits schools into two groups.

Kumpulan A covers Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu.

Kumpulan B covers Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Pulau Pinang, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.

The one-day difference means term breaks fall on different dates.

2026 dates at a glance

The 2026 school year has four main breaks.

• First term break: Kumpulan A 20 March to 28 March, nine days. Kumpulan B 21 March to 29 March, nine days.
• Mid-year break: Kumpulan A 22 May to 6 June, sixteen days. Kumpulan B 23 May to 7 June, sixteen days.
• Second term break: Kumpulan A 28 August to 5 September, nine days. Kumpulan B 29 August to 6 September, nine days.
• Year-end break: Kumpulan A 4 December to 31 December, twenty-eight days. Kumpulan B 5 December to 31 December, twenty-seven days.

Some festivals fall inside these breaks. Use them to extend your stay.

• Hari Raya Aidilfitri: 21 and 22 March, already inside the first term break. KPM adds 19 March for Kumpulan A and 19 to 20 March for Kumpulan B.
• Chinese New Year: 17 and 18 February. KPM gives Kumpulan A 15, 16 and 19 February off. Kumpulan B gets 16, 19 and 20 February off.
• Pesta Kaamatan: 30 and 31 May, for Sabah and Labuan only. Hari Gawai Dayak: 1 and 2 June, for Sarawak only. Both sit inside the mid-year break.
• Christmas: 25 December, inside the year-end break.

Other public holidays can turn a weekend into a longer trip.

• 17 and 18 February: Chinese New Year.
• 21 and 22 March: Hari Raya Puasa.
• 1 May: Labour Day.
• 27 and 28 May: Hari Raya Qurban.
• 31 May: Wesak Day.
• 1 June: Agong's official birthday.
• 25 August: Maulidur Rasul.
• 31 August: National Day.
• 16 September: Malaysia Day.
• 8 November: Deepavali, except Sarawak.
• 25 December: Christmas.

State holidays matter too.

• 1 February: Federal Territory Day, for Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.
• 19 February: Awal Ramadan, for Johor and Kedah.
• 23 March: Sultan of Johor's birthday.
• 29 and 30 September: Sultan of Kelantan's birthday.
• 6 November: Sultan of Perak's birthday.
• 11 December: Sultan of Selangor's birthday.

Look ahead to 2027

For 2027, KPM has only announced the school start date. Both groups return on 4 January 2027. No term-break dates have been released yet.

• 6 and 7 February: Chinese New Year.
• 10 and 11 March: Hari Raya Puasa.
• 1 May: Labour Day.
• 17 and 18 May: Hari Raya Qurban.
• 20 May: Wesak Day.
• 6 June: Awal Muharam.
• 7 June: Agong's official birthday.
• 15 August: Maulidur Rasul.
• 31 August: National Day.
• 16 September: Malaysia Day.
• 28 October: Deepavali, except Sarawak.
• 25 December: Christmas.

Use those dates as a rough guide only. They are public holidays, not school holidays, until KPM releases the 2027 academic calendar.

• Book early for the mid-year and year-end breaks. They are the longest breaks in 2026.

KPM has announced that both Kumpulan A and Kumpulan B start on 4 January 2027. The full 2027 term-break calendar has not been published yet.
